Convenience Stores

Regional Convenience Chain, New England Region
The 300+ stores throughout this New England-based convenience store chain averaged 300,000 kWh or $45,000 per year. Major electrical loads included 5-Door Split Compressor Reach-in Freezers, 11-Door Walk-in Coolers, Open Front Refrigerator Cases, 2 Small Deli Walk-ins, 2 HVAC Rooftop Units and outdoor lights. After NRM engineered and installed Remote Site Manager to control and monitor all refrigeration, HVAC and outdoor lighting, electrical consumption was reduced by 33%, which equaled $15,000 per year in energy costs. The customer experienced payback in less than a year, and gained substantial control over maintenance costs by diagnosing equipment malfunctions before they became a major problem.*

Grocery Stores
Grocery Outlet, Sacramento, California
Owners Monica and Eddie Ortiz wanted to reduce their energy costs and control and monitor their refrigeration equipment from anywhere. Average energy consumption was 600,000 kWh or $65,000 per year, with major refrigeration loads coming from a 5-Door Dairy Walk-in Cooler, Produce Walk-in Cooler and Freezer, 18-Door Frozen Food Merchandiser and several open front refrigerated cases and coffin freezers. NRM obtained utility rebates, engineered and installed RSM, and replaced existing shaded pole fan motors with NRM EC replacement motors. Thanks to RSM’s data tracking and measurement/verification ability, Monica and Eddie saw their compressor runtime reduced by 20%, evaporator runtime by 65%, cooler door runtime by 79%, and freezer door runtime by 47% over a one-year period.* “I would recommend RSM to other Grocery Outlet owners and independents like me who want to prevent product loss, minimize energy and maintenance costs and save themselves time.”

Schools & Universities
Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Harvard Dining Services began using NRM's Remote Site Manager (RSM) in 2008, as part of their Green Campus initiative. The system, which monitors and controls more than 35 walk-in coolers and freezers in the main kitchen and bakery, as well as five additional dining facilities, has generated $35,000 in electric savings and reduced carbon emissions by nearly 300,000 pounds annually.* RSM monitoring also saved thousands of dollars on a repair of a compressor in one of the dining halls. "Without RSM, we would never have picked up on the problem and burned out the compressor," says Dining Services Director of Facilities Bob Leandro. RSM's powerful automated alarms alerted key personnel to the problem via cell phone and email. "We not only saved money on the repair itself, but potentially a freezer's worth of product that might have been lost otherwise. With RSM you can start to see if there is a problem, and get to it before there is a catastrophic failure."

Wholesalers/Distributors
G&S Produce, Sacramento, California
Gary Kilgore, owner of G&S Produce, wanted to reduce energy consumption in his 73,000-cubic-foot space through better control of his 4 walk-in coolers (with 6 dedicated compressors), which averaged 390,000 kWh or $40,000 a year. One year following the RSM installation, G&S realized an annual reduction of almost 22% or $8,700 — 60% more than estimated.* “Through real time monitoring and alarms, RSM identified a frozen contactor in one of my compressors that I would not have otherwise know. I calculated that fixing that one problem has saved me over $1,000 a year in wasted energy. The ability get online, change settings and track temperatures is equally important to ensure food safety guidelines.”

Produce Distributor, Chelsea, Massachusetts
Ten walk-in coolers refrigerated by 18 dedicated compressors accounted for the majority of energy costs in this 330,000-cubic-foot facility — approximately 800,000 kWh or $95,000 per year. NRM engineered and installed RSM and CoolTrol to control temperature, evaporator fans and defrost of each refrigeration unit. The system reduced electrical consumption by 29% — $29,000 a year in energy costs — which was nearly 3 times what was originally estimated, resulting in a payback of less than 6 months.*
