NRM Success Story

New Hope Community Outreach Services

Charles County, MD

New Hope Outreach Services has slashed their electric bill by roughly $1,600 per year. By year 10 of having NRM's solution, they will have saved aroud $16,000 in profits that otherwise would've been spent on energy costs.

It’s a great feeling when you can assist a person or an organization dedicated to helping others in less-fortunate positions than their own. Especially, when you can do it in a big way.

While small businesses such as restaurants and convenience stores are the most common customer types for NRM’s energy-efficiency measures, there are plenty of community organizations who rely on walk-in coolers and freezers to keep their food stored safely—food that isn’t just to be sold for profit, but food that might be someone’s only meal that day.

New Hope Community Outreach Services in Charles County, Maryland, is one such organization. They are a non-profit that provides clothing, food, and critical resources to community members in need. They’ve been a vital lifeline for over twelve years. Along with food, they provide housing support and workforce development.

Being a non-profit, they can benefit from any extra help they can get, wherever they can get it. Through an energy-efficiency program from their utility provider, SMECO, that help came in the form of refrigeration upgrades to reduce their energy usage, and thus lower their commercial electric bill.

They implemented NRM’s smart controls, CoolTrol, which adapts the refrigeration’s operation to go from running continuously to running based on need and temperature requirements, received evaporator fan motor upgrades, anti-sweat door heater controls, and their defrost was improved with an electric defrost kit that allows them to defrost their coils with the push of a button when they spot ice building up.

Over the next ten years, these enhancements are projected to save them over 100,000 kWh in energy usage. This translates to around $16,000 that they will be able to use for other crucial endeavors instead of being spent on unnecessary energy costs!

The installation was very easy. The NRM installers were on time, and the work was fast and efficient. They even trained us on how to use the new controls on the freezer, and when I called in with a question, NRM helped me quickly. As far as the product features, the safe shutoff is great for us because when we get a delivery, we have to sort it, load it, and organize it in the freezer. Not having the fans going makes it easier for us.”
