Some of our most rewarding projects are the ones where our customers are able to take advantage of every improvement we offer for maximum operational gains within their utility’s small biz programs. This is because for these customers, it is often truly business-changing upgrades that provide long-term benefits.
One such project was Carroll Fuels on Greenmount Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland. They were eligible for NRM’s refrigeration solution through their utility provider, BGE, who offers energy efficiency programs for local small businesses.
What exactly did Carroll Fuels receive as part of their energy efficiency project?
First, as the foundation of NRM’s offering, they received powerful smart controls that adapt how the refrigeration cools the walk-in cooler from “run all the time” to “run only when it needs to.” This typically leads to huge energy savings especially during winter months—why should your system run as hard in the middle of January as it does in the middle of July?
The user-friendly controller provides one-button access to important settings, operating info, and much more than a traditional thermostat.
Along with the controls, the walk-in cooler was modernized with hardware upgrades that also added to the efficiency gains. These measures included: replacing evaporator fan motors with newer, high-efficiency models, replacing the in-cooler fluorescent lights with LED, and added anti-sweat door heater controls for their cooler glass doors.
Combined, all of these improvements projected to reduce their yearly usage by 18,000 kWh moving forward, which equates to just under $3,000 in actual cash savings per year that otherwise would have gone into their commercial electric bill.
To make the whole deal even better, BGE offered Carroll Fuels a generous incentive and on-bill financing so Carroll Fuels didn’t have to pay a cent out of pocket for their upgrades!
