NRM Success Story

The Craft Coalition

Halethorpe, MD

The Craft Coalition has slashed their electric bill by roughly $2,100 per year. By year 10 of having NRM's solution, they will have saved over $20,000 in profits that otherwise would've been spent on energy costs.

The Craft Coalition, a premier beer distributor in Maryland and the greater D.C. area, was on the hunt for a solution that could not only help cut costs, but also make their jobs easier in some capacity in their day-to-day operations. As a business that is responsible for not only their own success but all of their retailers and suppliers, any new tool or measure they implemented could not interfere with their processes.

When they were introduced to NRM’s offering, the Craft Coalition team were initially skeptical about the savings as many businesses typically are; plenty of companies offer to save you money and don’t. But when they learned NRM was an official contractor partner of BGE who provides all refrigeration solutions to their energy efficiency program, Craft Coalition knew it could be trusted.

A knowledgeable NRM Energy Advisor took an assessment of their refrigeration system and its current operation, which revealed two sources of potential energy savings: optimizing when the system ran to cool the air in the space, and upgrading the motors of their large evaporator fan units.

NRM’s controls adapt the cooling to a set temperature range, which will stop components from running unnecessarily to prevent energy waste and excessive wear and tear. And upgrading their evaporator fan motors means more effective and efficient operation when it does have to run.

But the facilities’ staff’s favorite feature of NRM’s controls? The big red safe system shutdown button. This feature turns off the cooling system safely for 20 minutes while drivers are loading or unloading product, ensuring the space isn’t losing all the cold air while the doors are open and making working conditions a little better by not having cold air blowing directly on you.

The projected savings from implementing the controls was around 14,000 kWh, and over $2,000 in actual dollars per year. Their facility also qualified for generous incentives from BGE that delivered a payback on their investment of only 9 months.

"So far everything’s been fantastic. It’s great to have regulated temperatures and have it automated at all times, and the controller itself is easy to use. NRM’s technician spent time after installing the system to train us and they were very informative and helpful. I’d recommend it to anyone!"
