Liquor stores and package stores are a staple customer of NRM’s solution for one very specific but obvious reason: customers like to buy their beer, seltzers, and soft drinks cold.

Crestmount Wine & Spirits in Jessup, Maryland utilized NRM’s various smart controls and efficiency upgrades to improve the operation of their refrigeration system on a number of levels.

One of the major improvements was optimizing their evaporator fan sets to run only when the system needs to initiate cooling. In the majority of walk-in coolers, the evaporator fans run 24/7, which not only wastes energy, it is constantly generating heat, and that can lead to iced up coils regularly.

Speaking of iced up coils, Crestmount Wine & Spirits also upgraded their thermostatic defrost to an electric defrost tied into NRM’s smart controls, which de-ice the coils better and allows for the staff to initiate a defrost whenever they see ice, instead of waiting for an emergency maintenance call.

NRM’s solution delivers big improvements in energy efficiency that lead directly to a lower commercial electric bill. Along with those measures, anti-sweat door heater controls were implemented to run the heaters on a need-based schedule, as well, and the motors in the evaporate fan set were upgraded to more efficient models.

In sum, these improvements are projected to reduce the refrigeration’s energy consumption by around 20,000 kWh per year, compared to before. This translates to roughly $250 savings on their electric bill every single month.

With NRM’s help, they were also able to take advantage of the BGE Small Business Program. Crestmount Wine & Spirits was awarded a generous incentive to undertake the project, as well as on-bill financing. They didn’t pay anything out-of-pocket to get NRM’s solution!
